Here's the latest in our ongoing series of history lessons about the "Chicken Tax," which kept the Volkswagen T2 Pickup and other imported light trucks from gaining wide distribution in the United States. It turns out the reason light trucks were targeted is that President Johnson was looking to address multiple challenges at once. He was also trying to prevent autoworkers strike before the 1964 election, and get the union's support for his civil rights platform. Now you know!
